Youth Activities
Program
The Youth Activities
Program has been very busy lately. March 10th and 11th were the days for
our winter campout, which had a great turnout. We had around 15 youth members
and half that amount of parents. The parents, however, stayed inside overnight.
We had a number of very interesting shelters, ranging from a dugout built
into a snow bank to a loghouse-like shelter built from a tarp and stakes.
Over the weekend, we played capture-the-flag, ran survival sled races,
had huge snowball fights, and were lucky enough to have had great cooks
and food. Everyone there had a great time. We also had a work team head
out to Bogner Marsh to clean out duck boxes over the March Break.
We are looking for
junior volunteers to help out at the hatchery after school and on weekends.
If anyone is interested, call Jesse Henrich (376-5865), or Mike Anderson
(371-8834), or me, Laura Stephenson (363-2893).
Our last meeting
was on April 1st, and while there we discussed our plans for the upcoming
summer campout, the Home Show, the retriever trials, a bird banding trip,
Harbour Heat Wave, fish stocking, the fishing day, the shooting and archery
program and projects that need to be done.
Pitch-in Day is
on May 12th, and our May meeting will be at the clubhouse on the same day
at 10:00 AM. the retriever trials will be taking place at Bogner Marsh
on May 19th and 20th.
***ALL SHOOTING
RANGES ARE CLOSED ON JULY 6-8 FOR THE SUMMER CAMPOUT. THERE WILL
BE NO SHOOTING TAKING PLACE***

SSA FISHERIES
ADVISORY REPORT
I'd like to say a
special thanks to the SSA fisheries committee members who helped take over
a lot of my fisheries tasks while I was recuperating from a nasty leg injury.
Your help was much appreciated, and won't be forgotten.
On April 10th. 32,000
year plus rainbow trout were stocked into the Sydenham R., later this month
the remainder of our year old rainbows will follow. On April 20th. all
our brown trout were moved into the smaller SSA hatchery, and on April
23rd. all the hatching trays were made ready for the spring collection
of rainbow trout eggs. To add to this hubbub around our hatchery, the MNR
financed ladies fin clipping crew moved into our hatchery also on Monday,
April 23rd.
After many delays
due to spring high water flows in the Sydenham river, we finally have the
Mill Dam fishway operational. The SSA volunteer crews should be working
the fishway and collecting our rainbow trout eggs starting around the 24th.
of April.
The FAC will be
doing some follow-up action on the Artemesia Waters Ltd. proposal to take
176 million litres of water per day from a spring which flows into the
Rocky Saugeen R.. Test results show that this would reduce this cold water
spring flow by 78%. We will be sending letters to MOE and DFO on our objections
to this proposal.
Hope you saw our
SSA junior and student members at the 2001 Home Expo and Outdoor Recreation
Show. They were there demonstrating their activities and also helping visitors
to the show, stock some of our SSA year plus rainbow trout into the waters
of Owen Sound. Well done SSA juniors and SSA seniors who helped make this
show another success.
Our next public
display will be on Sat. April 28th. at MacDonnell Shell Fuels, Rockford.
Once again we'll have rainbow trout in our fish transfer tank, and a pictorial
display set up showing SSA conservation and SSA Club projects.
Doug Murdoch is
organizing our first stream project this year. It's happening right now,
and consists of planting a treed corridor along a tributary of the Pottawatomi
R. on the property of Don Houston. When finished, 1000 three year old nursery
stock white cedars should be in the ground protecting the watercourse.
In closing this
fisheries report, I'd like to remind all SSA members that this years Club
organized "Pitch-In", will be on May 12th. Again we'll start at the Mill
Dam at 9:00 AM and work to 12:00 noon, followed with refreshments at the
SSA clubhouse. FAC member Rob Wilson is organizing this years event. Please
give him a call at 376-3181 if you can help out with his important and
very high profile SSA public event.
